20 Ways to be happy & creative

This is quite a random post but I felt inspired to write it due to the fact that I get down and unmotivated at times. So, I have come up with a way to make and use this list as a reminder to myself that when I need to be constructive, there are ways that can make it possible for me. I hope people can benefit from the list too whether they are feeling the same or just in need of that boost of creativity.

1. Carry a note book everywhere
You never know what interesting things could catch your eye whether it is something to draw or write about.

2. Read books
Not everyone likes reading but there’s always going to be a book out there for everyone. Books can be a great distraction as they take you to another state of mind and allow you to emphasise with the characters. Books are just interesting, if you find the right one for yourself. I get most enjoyment from fiction books. I’m a sucker for a romance novel.

3. Listen to music
An obvious one to most but my psychology teacher once told me Listening to at least 10 minutes of music can change a negative mood to a more positive one. I find listening to instrumentals and beat tapes most effective because there are no words to influence my mood. Also listening to music from different genres opens your ears to new sounds for possible enjoyment.

4. Make lists
One of my favourite things to do, and I'm even doing it now. Lists allow me to be organised or remember things easier.

5. Be an optimist
I myself can generally be a pessimist but I'm slowly learning to look on the brighter side of life, and see the glass half full instead of half empty. Don't beat yourself up on things that didn't go to plan. Every experience is learnt.

6. Drink tea/coffee
Caramel Frappucinos from Starbucks always make me happy and herbal tea can be very therapeutic. Coffees and teas just taste great.

7. Practice makes perfect
A phrase I'm still trying to adapt to. People are rarely good at things on the first try. It takes perseverance and hard work.

8. Long Walks
Long walks are great for a time out and for you to think and reflect about issues and situations.
9. Write down all your ideas
No matter how big or small always record ideas. They allow potential for creativity and can be helpful in the future.

10. Surround yourself with creative people
It’s always good to be around people who have aspirations and goals. It will push you to want to do the same.

11. Tidy your space
One thing I hate is a messy environment. My mood can be automatically lifted if I'm in a clean space.

12. Drawing
Drawing is one of the best ways to release creativity and have fun with it. You don't have to be an artist, just be freehand with it.

13. Take risks
You never know until you try! Think about the worst that can happen. If it's not that bad, then why not take a chance?

14. Receive feedback
Knowing where you went wrong with something is crucial to avoid making the same mistake again. It also alerts you of room for improvement.

15. Learn something new
We have so many questions but never try and find out the answers. What are clouds made from? I still haven't found out the answer yet!

16. Cooking
I love food and I love cooking. Eating good food makes me happy, especially food I experiment with that has worked. Food and also be linked to boosting your mood! For example; chocolate triggers serotonin release which gives a feel good effect, tomatoes contain lycopene which reduces irritation and almonds contain tyrosine which stimulates good feelings.

17. Believe you're beautiful
Erm, yes very cliché but if you don't love and respect yourself, you can't expect others to. People won't always be there to reassure you that you're perfect the way you are. Only you should be the only reason for change.

18. Do something!

You’re alive aren't you, which is a blessing itself. We live in a more open minded world nowadays so anyone can succeed it they put their mind to it. Even learning a new skill can benefit you.

19. Have fun

Such an obvious phrase but do what makes you happy! Visit friends, go places, have a laugh. Make the most out of life and enjoy it.

20. Work towards projects
This involves both creativeness and happiness. Give yourself something to do, it creates a learning process and leads to happiness as the end result.

I'm sure there are many more ways that lead to a happy and creative person but that's part of ‘make lists’. You can use list to write down things that inspire you to be creative and happy. You may surprise yourself in the way that the things you least expected make you just that.
